I'm really sad that Mulan and Shang aren't your main OTP on this blog anymore, but I've accepted it. & I guess while you're transitioning to the other OTP, I have one last request of you: Help me explain to my friend why Mulan/Shang are an amazing OTP. If there is anyone who understands their relationship really well it's you. They are more than just two opposites that work well together, it's unexplainable. Will you help me? Please?

[[in theory, Mulan/Shang is still my main ship on this blog! it’s just that i’ve had much more opportunity to write Mulan/Joaquín lately; everything that’s NOT tagged #she’s the man; or #v: la orquídea defaults to Mulan/Shang. youfightgood was one of my main roleplay partners for a long time—a lot of my Mulan worldbuilding and meta/headcanons came straight out of our discussions—so you can probably imagine…it’s a little disorienting, trying to “get out there” again.
But to your point, yes, I’ll do my best! I don’t think this will be a really EXHAUSTIVE list of all the reasons they’re amazing together (there are SOOO MANY)—I’m just gonna pick a few points and run with those. So let’s get down to business!

are you OC friendly?
— Anonymous
[[I hope so! I’m aware that I tend to follow characters whose canon I’m more familiar with (keep in mind this also excludes many canon characters). But I do follow and write with OCs sometimes. If you’re asking because you’re an OC that follows me, I actually haven’t checked my follower list in a little while, so who knows? I might follow you back one of these days!
I have to ask, I remember you saying in a drabble or for something that Mulan and Shang often shared a tent before their marriage. But don't you think that's a little out of character for both of them? I mean Mulan and Shang both respect their traditions and would only go against it if it was absolutely necessary. Plus I think it would reflect badly on their honor if they did so. So unless I'm missing something, why did you choose to depict them this way? It's cute and sweet, but OOC?

[[first off, sorry about how long it took me to get to this! I wanted to wait until I could sit down and answer you properly, but I still feel bad seeing as I can’t even tag you to let you know it’s answered D:

"Do you think the Emperor is worthy of loyalty unto death?"

—花木蘭—“It’s a little late for a question like that, don’t you
think?”
When Chi Fu rode into Juexhizen armed with conscription no-
tices, there was no doubt in her mind that someone must go.
That Mulan, or for that matter her father, might have instead sat
sipping tea and waiting for calamity to fall on their heads was
laughable. Unthinkable. Of course, the Huas must serve their
country. They have a duty to the emperor. What Mulan doesn’t
admit aloud is that it’s her duty to Bàba that spurred her to action.

Recently I got an anon who made me feel extremely uncomfortable. They were complimenting my writing, which was thoughtful of them; less thoughtful is that they complimented me at the expense of other Mulans. I’ve deleted the message, but am acknowledging it in this post because I want to make very clear how upset I am.
This is not a competition. I’m here to write with other people, not against them.
How dare you make a blanket statement about everybody who plays one muse? Everyone has something different to bring to a character. You cannot convince me otherwise. And I am happy to receive recognition for what I bring to Mulan–EXCEPT if you’re going to do it by tearing other people down.
Please don’t send me messages like this.
"What did your father do that made him so famous?"

—花木蘭—He’d thought everybody knew that story; but dismiss-
ed the thought in the flicker of an eyelid. Ping felt he was on fami-
liar ground after weeks of training (to be a man as well as a soldier),
but he wouldn’t hold that against the asker.
“When my father fought in the army, his commanding officer was
killed in battle. Bàba led a group of his fellow soldiers in a second
assault and drove back the enemy. I know people still disagree
over whether he should have been honored or punished for his de-
cision.”
i'm so sorry, this is a stupid question, but... i'm not immersed in chinese culture and i haven't really watched mulan that much, either... but she's called 'fa mulan' and 'hua mulan'? which one is her name? i know ping is something she makes up on the spot, but isn't 'hua' her family name, or something? why is she called 'fa mulan' then? does that mean like 'miss' or 'lady'? i googled it and couldn't find anything, im sorry...

[[It’s not a stupid question at all! I’m aware the reasons I’ve chosen to use Huā instead of Fa aren’t obvious, so this is a good opportunity for me to explain them.

do you have an au universes in which Mulan was never found out as a woman and continues serving in the army? maybe was stationed other places? (on a side note, i wonder what her family told people who wanted to know where Mulan had gone, lol)

[[In the specific case of the Disney movie, I headcanon that it was relatively easy to conceal her disappearance, as she was only gone for a season or so and anyways, everyone is fairly busy in the farming community and don’t always see much of each other between town errands and festivals. As for your AU idea, while Angel and I have a Twelfth Night AU thread that explores this, I don’t have a full-fledged verse for it, no. But it’s worth getting into, so I’ll make a note to do it sometime! In which case I’d definitely go more into what’s happening on the home front…

Character solidifying! (3 of 3)
Who are their friends? Lovers? ‘Type’ or ‘ideal’ partner? *answered below
Shang, Jim, Mushu, Ling, Yao, & Qian Po. Mulan didn’t form many close friendships until her late teens, when she left home to join the army. As a result, the list is a little short, and male-dominated—but obviously this will change as time, and writing, goes on!
In mainverse, Mulan and Shang eventually fall in love and marry. (At press time, my pages are not updated to reflect this, but I’m working on an AU in which Mulan befriends and falls for Joaquín Mondragon instead. Here’s hoping she makes friends with other characters from The Book of Life too!)
What do they want from a partner? What do they think and feel of sex?
Mulan hasn’t put a lot of thought into it…but it would be nice to love someone who loves her, too. And it’s important that he doesn’t try to turn the Savior of China into a trophy wife. Also, he has to be kind…and that’s really all that matters. The rest, she can leave up to fate.
As for sex. Mulan may be a gently-bred young woman, but she also grew up on a farm. She is under the impression that sex between humans has a little more grace and joy to it (at least, ideally) than between animals–but is aware that it could easily go wrong, which makes her anxious about her first time. Fortunately, Mulan does end up with someone she can comfortably figure things out with.
