Heroine #3: Mulan

Heroine of the Week BECAUSE: Man, where do I start? She’s been my hero since I was nine. I love the original legend - Hua Mulan… but to be honest, my heart lies with Disney’s version because that film is one of disney’s most honest in terms of heroic progression. She’s not sure who she is at the beginning of the film and she’s not sure who she is at the end… but she’s getting there. My favourite bit in the film is that last scene on the roof - when it’s her VS Shan-Yu - you know she’s not coming out of that. She wouldn’t beat him in a fight. But she DOES have a brain and she DOES have a plan and she DOES have a few minutes to manipulate him into holding-that-spot. And she does it, all by herself. SO cool.

About My Design: I love the film, and the designs from the film, but I do wonder what it would have looked like had it been animated by Studio Ghibli or some such studio. She certainly wouldn’t have looked quite so clean by the end - so this is my attempt to rectify that.
