“I could tell.” She teased, cheeks still a bit hot, but then tilting her head at him curiously, wondering what he was thinking about. Audrey had thought it was the best out of the day simply because she knew him and wouldn’t have minded kissing him under different circumstances.
Well if he wanted it. “Yeah, again, sorry about ambushing you. I’m sure that wasn’t the best kiss you’ve had.” Audrey joked, hands in her pockets and watching him carefully. She had a sneaking suspicion that the reason he was acting like this might be…well she hoped that she hadn’t stolen his first kiss, especially since he seemed so taken aback by it.
But if she had, she’d be willing to help out and show him they weren’t all terrible. And that’s all she’d be doing. Helping out a friend. A cute friend that made her smile and had helped her out too. No matter how soft his lips had been against hers, a little gasp of surprise parting them when she’d cupped his cheeks.
“Well…” Swinging his arms back and forth, Ping tried to thicken and deepen his voice, casting around for some false, boyish bravado. Through practicing them in his tent and even through quick thinking, Ping thought that up until now he’d done a pretty good job of convincing people he was a boy, one who liked girls too much to be asked to share a tent with one of the other soldiers - because that could only go horribly wrong. But of course, the truth was that Ping couldn’t truthfully tell her that it was the best kiss he had ever had, or that it was the worst, because it was the only one he’d ever had. Unable to agree or disagree with her, Ping stared balefully at Audrey for a second before dropping his eyes to his feet.
Whatever men did outside of marriage, women didn’t take other women as lovers. At least, not that Ping had ever heard of - and the way the other soldiers talked about women, somehow Ping thought they would have mentioned knowing something like that. The concept wasn’t so much frightening to Ping as alien, something he couldn’t wrap his head around. How did you carry on your family line unless you had children? Was loving another woman suitable grounds for a husband to divorce you? Were two women so natural that nobody discussed it, or so unthinkable?
