One thing I love about playing Mulan as Ping, specifically, is how damn awkward she is while pretending to be a guy.  The deep voice, the swaggering and posturing - while everybody just kind of stares at her in confusion.  And when they DON’T stare at her, it’s even better, because presumably she’s just accepted as a painfully awkward young boy.

It means I get to write her one way but the whole time, try to keep it clear that I’m writing Mulan playing that part.  And when I get to write Mulan when she can be herself, in her thoughts or in private, it’s even better.
